[Lecturer News = Reporter Min Han] The Green Hydrogen Glocal Leading Research Center, Jeju National University (RLRC, Director Professor Sangjae Kim) held the “2nd Visiting Special Lecture for Fostering Future Regional Talent in Green Hydrogen” at Jungang Girls’ High School on May 7. The lecture was organized to enhance local high school students’ understanding of the green hydrogen industry and AI-based energy technologies while providing opportunities to explore future careers in the energy sector.


The lecture was delivered by Research Professor Yongwoon Kim under the theme “The Encounter of Clean Energy Green Hydrogen and AI.” Beginning with the basic concepts of energy and the global energy transition trend, the lecture introduced various real-world applications of AI technologies in the energy industry. In particular, students were introduced to practical examples of AI-based energy operation technologies, including electricity demand forecasting, renewable energy output management, battery operation optimization, and building energy efficiency improvement, with explanations tailored to the students’ level of understanding.


In addition, complex technological concepts were explained in an accessible way through familiar analogies and examples related to the Jeju region, helping students better understand the subject matter. Participating students showed strong interest in how the future energy industry extends beyond technology itself and is closely connected to the environment, industry, and everyday life.


The lecture also addressed the dual nature of AI technologies. While AI is gaining attention as a key tool for solving energy-related challenges, it simultaneously requires large-scale electricity consumption. In this context, green hydrogen technology, capable of storing and utilizing surplus renewable electricity, was presented as an important alternative. The lecture emphasized the role and necessity of green hydrogen in the expansion of renewable energy systems.


Furthermore, the unique characteristics of the Jeju region were introduced. Jeju Island is one of the fastest-growing renewable energy transition regions in Korea and is characterized by a high proportion of wind power generation, resulting in significant fluctuations in power output. These conditions provide an ideal environment for demonstrating AI-based energy management technologies, positioning Jeju as a promising testbed for next-generation energy industries integrating renewable energy, green hydrogen, and AI technologies.
